The Royal Scottish National Orchestra is one of Europe's leading symphony orchestras
Formed in 1891 as the Scottish Orchestra, the company became the Scottish National Orchestra in 1950, and was awarded Royal Patronage in 1991. Most recently, the Orchestra became internationally recognized for the quality of its performances under the baton of then Principal Conductor, Alexander Lazarev , notably for the complete cycles of Shostakovich and Prokofiev symphonies. Alexander Lazarev was recently appointed Conductor Emeritus.
The RSNO has recently toured to Norway, Greece, Spain and Sweden. The most recent tour to Austria and Croatia in May 2005 included two concerts in the Musikverein in Vienna. The Orchestra played at the opening ceremony of the new Scottish Parliament building in October 2004, and appears regularly at the Edinburgh International Festival and the BBC London Proms . Most recently the Orchestra performed in Paris as part of the Présences 2006 Festival.
In the past few years, the RSNO has achieved a world-wide reputation for the quality of its recordings. They’ve also recorded soundtracks for films such as Vertigo (winner of a Gramophone Award), Star Wars, Titanic, The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape. Most recently, the first CD in a new partnership with Linn Records with Alexander Lazarev conducting Shostakovich's Symphony No11 has been released to great critical acclaim.
Committed to performing to the highest standard, the RSNO’s award-winning education programme continues to develop musical talent and appreciation with people of all ages and abilities throughout Scotland. In education and outreach work, members of the Orchestra work with schoolchildren and community groups, in some of the biggest projects to be undertaken in the UK, to ensure the continuation of music as an integral part of life for future audiences.
