作為我國第一所由社會力量舉辦、國家重點支持的新型研究型大學，西湖大學現(xiàn)狀如何？全國政協(xié)委員、西湖大學校長施一公在回答記者提問時表示，因為西湖大學的誕生和發(fā)展是建立在中國高等教育大發(fā)展的土壤之上，可以說是中國高等教育發(fā)展到今天的必然產(chǎn)物。

"China's science and technology have made a great leap, but it is still lagging behind in some basic research areas. There are still some breakthroughs to be made and some demands from society to be met," he said. "So we need to nurture more outstanding creative talent."

施一公說：“中國的科學技術已經(jīng)取得長足進步，在基礎研究領域還有很大的差距，我國原創(chuàng)性的研究還不能夠完全滿足社會經(jīng)濟發(fā)展的需求。我們需要培養(yǎng)更多更優(yōu)秀的拔尖創(chuàng)新人才?！?/p>

He added that this is the target and direction of China's educational system in the future and it is also why he and his colleagues have spared no effort over the past two years to establish the new higher education institution in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province.

施一公表示，這就應該是未來中國教育努力的目標和方向，也是他和同事在過去兩年不遺余力地創(chuàng)辦西湖大學的根本宗旨。西湖大學位于浙江省杭州市。

The university has received more than 6,000 job applications from all over the world over the past two years, Shi added.

施一公介紹說，僅僅過去兩年，西湖大學就收到了來自世界各地的6000多份應聘申請。

"We finally selected and hired about 100 world-class scientists, and more than 80 percent of them are talented Chinese who grew up in China and came back after study and research overseas," he said.

他說：“我們從中擇優(yōu)聘用了近百位世界級的科學家，其中80%以上是我們中國自己培養(yǎng)、然后輸送出去的優(yōu)秀學子?！?/p>
