Sun Chen: It sounds like you are in China…
Finn: But all these sounds are in fact from a sound installation in London.
Sun Chen: 我們?cè)谶@里聽到的聲音來自一個(gè)聲音裝置 a sound installation 這個(gè)聲音裝置就在倫敦泰晤士河旁邊的一個(gè)大廳里面。這項(xiàng)活動(dòng)也是英國慶祝中國文化的大型活動(dòng)的一部分。而這項(xiàng)活動(dòng)叫做 China Now.
Finn: Welcome to On the Town, from BBC Learning English. I'm Finn.
Sun Chen: And I'm Sun Chen.
My name is Matthias; I'm an artist working mainly with sound. I'm particularly interested in soundscapes and city sounds.

Sun Chen: Matthias 就專門負(fù)責(zé)這個(gè)裝置來讓人們聽到中國藝術(shù)家在中國錄制的真實(shí)聲響。 Matthias 要做的工作就是把每天日常生活的聲響都收錄到聲響風(fēng)景當(dāng)中去 soundscapes 聲響風(fēng)景。
Finn: Yes you might know the word landscapes.
Sun Chen: 山水風(fēng)景。
Finn: Well these are like landscapes, but they're for your ears, not for your eyes. They're landscapes made of sound. Let's take a walk around.
So what we hear for example are sounds of markets in China, that then sometimes contrasts with more modern shopping centres and the soundscapes we experience there.
Matthias Kispert
Finn: We hear sounds of the traditional market contrasting with sounds from shopping centres.
Sun Chen: 市場(chǎng)的聲響和購物中心聲響的對(duì)比。
There are things like restaurants; restaurants play a big part in the social life over there in China.
Matthias Kispert
Finn: Sounds of restaurants.
Sun Chen: 餐館。
People working, you know; we have sounds of factories, sounds of construction, construction is happening loads obviously.
Matthias Kispert
Finn: Factories.
Sun Chen: 工廠。
Finn: Construction.
Sun Chen: 建筑工地。
Sounds of different forms of communication, you know; communication via the computer, via chat, people on the phone.
Matthias Kispert
Finn: And communication.
Sun Chen: 人們之間的相互溝通。
Finn: So, in other words, lots of different everyday sounds from modern Chinese cities. The question is: why put them together into this sound installation?
Sun Chen: 我們還特別向 Matthias 問到了為什么要把這些聲響組合在一起的原因。 他在回答我們問題的時(shí)候， 提到了這么一個(gè)單詞要特別注意 incidental 偶然的、不經(jīng)意的。
The idea comes from the incidental character of urban soundscapes. You know, people living together and the sort of social aspect of the soundscape means that there's a lot of sound happening all around us, and it tells us a lot about how people live together but at the same time it's a thing that just sort of happens, that is very incidental, you know.

Sun Chen: OK 這些表達(dá)的都是不經(jīng)意的聲響 incidental 每天圍繞在我們生活周圍的聲響。
Finn: Yes, and he said that these incidental sounds tell us a lot about the way people live together, although we might not normally notice them. He says these sounds "just sort of happen".
Sun Chen: They just sort of happen 這些聲響在日常生活中隨處發(fā)生。 它們也是我們?nèi)粘Ｉ畹囊徊糠帧?當(dāng)然這也就是為什么他對(duì)這些聲響的社會(huì)屬性很感興趣 the social aspects.
Finn: And Matthias thinks that these different urban sounds help reflect the social and economic changes that China is going through at the moment.
Sun Chen: They reflect 反應(yīng)了 the social and economic changes 社會(huì)和經(jīng)濟(jì)生活在當(dāng)今中國的變化。 隨著越來越多的英國人對(duì)中國越來越感興趣， 播放這些聲響就能夠幫助這里的英國人用一種嶄新的視角去了解每天中國普通的生活。
